Communique of Comité International pour
la Transition à la Démocratie en Iran (CITDI)
on June 2003 Student Protest in Iran
In recent days, university students in Tehran and other major cities of Iran
have protested against the government's plan to privatize Iranian universities.
The protests soon received support from Iranians and grew into anti-clericatic
demonstrations and clashes between students and pro-hardliner thugs around
campuses and student dormitories. Once again, Iranians voiced their demand
for freedom and referendum.
Comité International pour la Transition à la Démocratie en Iran acknowledges the legitimate grievances of students and all Iranians. It recognizes and supports the right of Iranian people to decide for their destiny. This right can only be achieved under democratic conditions and guaranteed freedom of expression of all Iranians regardless of their beliefs. The CITDI maintains that Iranians should be given the opportunity to determine their own future without foreign threat or domestic repression. The CITDI therefore calls upon world public opinion to attend to the Iranian situation and support the peaceful struggle of the Iranian people for democracy, independence, freedom of political prisoners -- regardless of their beliefs -- and a referendum to decide their own future.
